Obituary: Yogeshcandra dasa

Yogeshcandra dasYogeshcandra dasa was born in Santo Domingo on August 23, 1968.

He was born with a handicap, Spina Bifida (Latin: “split spine”).  Most children that are born with this condition only survive 13 days.  Krishna had other plans for him and he survived.  When he was around 5 years old he developed a very gradual gangrene of his legs.  By the time the gangrene was detected it was too late and both legs needed to be amputated.

For four years he refused to go to school or leave the house.

When he was 9 years old he started to think about his future: “What was going to happen to me when my parents are no longer around?”  So he decided to go to school.  He completed his high school and went on to college.

During his high school years he started practicing sports. At first he was playing volleyball, but he wanted to practice a sport where he would win or lose by his own merits.  He started to run in marathons, first in Santo Domingo and later in the NYC marathon from 2000- 2006.

He also practiced yoga, and came across Srila Prabhupada’s books, where he read that he was not the body.  This knowledge gave him great happiness and an entire new perspective on life!

After receiving preliminary training in Krishna consciousness from Prabhupada dasa, now HH BPV Damodara Maharaja, in 2008 Bhakta Jose Joaquin became inspired to seek shelter and receive Harinama initiation from HH Romapada Swami.

Lately Yogeshcandra dasa, under the guidance of HG Ramabhadra Prabhu, was working towards meeting the requirements for 2nd Initiation.

In November of 2012 Yogeshcandra dasa was planning to go to India on pilgrimage, attending a Yatra in Mayapur with HH Romapada Swami; unfortunately the flight was cancelled because of hurricane Sandy.

Shortly after that Yogeshcandra dasa developed a lesion on his leg that would not heal, and later it was also found that he had cancer.

After a series of intense medical procedures within the hospital in NYC, Yogeshcandra dasa left his body at 4:49am on April 4th, 2013.  The doctors were keeping him sedated because of the pain. Yogeshcandra dasa had his bead bag on his hand as he had requested.

“In this endeavor there is no loss or diminution.” Bg. 2.40

We all pray to Srila Prabhupada and Lord Krishna that Yogeshcandra dasa finds himself in a better situation in his ongoing eternal service to Krishna.
